Public Domain: Government

Governments across Europe have a key role to play when it comes to digital public spaces that serve the public interest. All levels of governments have a role to play, but we focus on three levels here:

  • On the local level, we expect governments to ensure that the regular physical public spaces are not used for extensive surveillance of citizens. So ban facial recognition but formulate and execute principles of how to deal with data on the local level, such as in Tada.
  • On the national level, governments have a big role to play in regulating and guaranteeing access to healthcare, education, public media and energy. We deal with these sectors separately, but expect them to put citizens first and to apply existing laws protecting human rights in digital spaces.
  • On the international level, we mostly look at Europe (as that is where we are based ourselves). We strive for the Next Generation Internet to be built on the common European public values.
